Callback report--

And so the Victory Theater was once again graced by my presence. Having learned nothing from my last visit here, or just because I never seem to be able to time my arrivals very well, I reached the Victory Theater at 3:58, a scant 2 minutes before my scheduled audition. Luckily, the theater held true-to-form and I didn't actually go in to read until 4:30.

So, in the pre-audition half-hour, I looked over the new scene - this was a quick discussion between Mark and a chambermaid, Amanda. The woman playing Amanda and I ran the scene outside a few times. At first she seemed like a pleasant, bubbly young woman, but as goofy laugh followed dumb story, followed ridiculous gesture, followed silly voices, I realized she was a slightly unstable and annoying-as-hell personality. Luckily, I think it fit the character.

Finally, 4:30. We go in. We run the scene once. There's a laugh or two. They seem forced, as if they're just trying to show us where the laughs should be. Fine. The director gives us a couple of notes. (My guy is "not so nice" although I didn't think I was playing him all that nice.) We did it again. It didn't go as smoothly. I screwed up the timing at one point and then she dropped a line, thus skipping one of my lines (the one line that could evidence of "less nice" portrayal of the character), but then they let the scene go on a bit longer, and I did some sidelong glance-shtick that I had come up with while waiting to go in, and they laughed. It may have been laughter because of what she was doing, but then again, I may have generated it myself.

I have high hopes now, but it will really come down to whether I look the best or not.

Go back to the Audition.
