23 EXT. SPOONER CEMETERY - DAY

Sparky's graveside rites. The mourners are gathered ten deep in a semi-circle around the open grave. All three Simpsons, Sparky's parents, and some familiar faces from the visitation.

The pallbearers carry the football-motif casket to the hole. Still dressed in their football uniforms. The coach holds up a bugle with one hand and blows, "Charge!"

The coffin hovers over the grave, lowers halfway in, then doesn't move any farther. IT IS STUCK.

The pallbearers exchange looks, and there is a horrified murmur from the crowd.

The cemetery proprietor, VIRGIL PAYNE, makes his way to the center of the scene. He wears a cheap suit and carries a bullhorn.

PAYNE
Folks, there's been a little
mistake. Give us a few minutes and
we'll remedy this most unfortunate
situation.

He moves outside the ring of people and yells out across the cemetery with the bullhorn --

PAYNE
Oras!

No response. His voice rasps as he screams --

PAYNE
ORAS!

As if from nowhere, Oras drops standing from a nearby tree. It's the man we saw earlier in the woods.

PAYNE
Get a shovel. The hole's not
wide enough.

Oras gives Payne the thumbs-up sign, then strolls away as if he couldn't care less. He still wears Sparky's red hightops.
