2002 Football Pool Weekly Update

Week Sixteen

"Two weeks, two strikes. Here's hoping New Orleans isn't the final stake in my football heart." --Mednick (RIP)

The bandwagon has amazed this year. First, a 13-week ride with nary a bump in the road. And now, a three-week collapse sending the Ducey Pool into a tailspin. Eight players went from undefeated to eliminated in that span taking three losses in a row. It doesn't happen often, so let's take a moment to pay tribute: Bekiaris, Crowder, Hein, Kessler~C, Mednick, Mollen~K, Rattner, Zopff all did it in Weeks 14-16. They could see the $2700 from where they were. Now all they can see is next season. It happened only four other times this year that a player took a loss in three straight weeks. A moment of silence again for their plight. They were: Gensler, Week 9-11, Betsy Thomas, Week 7-9, Andre Manoux, Week 4-6, and, of course, we all remember the nearly pre-season demise of Madonna Sullivan, out after taking losses in Weeks 1-3.

But while some suffered a quick demise, others had the distinction of the slowest demise. After taking losses in Week One, four players made it all the way to Week 16 before being eliminated. Their tenacity is commendable. Good-bye at last to true fighters: Applehof, Keller, Levy, and Paulson~R. (That being said, watch out for Fenton. He lost in week TWO but not at all since.)

And in further news from the graveyard, here's a Ducey Pool trivia question for you: What do Cook, Kessler~C, Mollen~K, Sullivan~N, Rudofsky~Ju, and Weene have in common? If you answered "previous winners," you were only half right. They are all previous winners who have been eliminated from the 2002 pool. That's right. We will have a new winner this season. At least one new name will be added to the list of Ducey Pool elite, the upper stratosphere of winning-team pickers. Who will it be?

Additional players who passed away without statistical or historical significance were Blake, Birghtbill, DeSantis, the Dickshot Sisters, Forte~O, Hogan, Lieber, Lund~M, Mann, Manoux~C, Manoux~Jo, McKenzie~C, McKenzie~M, Michalaks, Paulsen~J, Quaintance~T, Rivas, Speichers, Stein~T, Williamson, and Zelman~D.

"The Atlanta Falcons for the love of Christ." --Mark Mohelnitsky

At least someone remembers what the true meaning of Christmas is. Only 36 players left.
