2001 Football Pool Weekly Update

Playoffs - Week Three

And then there were still five.

Sort of.

The standings...
02 LOSS -- 5 In
03 LOSS -- 196 Out

It's all tied up going into the final weekend of the 2001 Football Season and a little game they call the Superbowl. We have five remaining combatants, yet a couple of them are unarmed. Lund~K and Walsh will be watching the game just like the rest of us, with no way to win any Ducey Pool money.

So, really, then there were three.

It all comes down to this: If St. Louis can somehow pull off an upset win against New England, Sulatycke and Holzmacher split the pot, collecting $900 each. If however, the Patriots beat up on the Rams like everyone thinks they are going to, we will have another lone winner. Rudofsky, you old Dofsky. $1800. That would be fun.

Good luck to our lucky three. And congratulations to all who participated this year on a fine season (except for, like, LaRose and Boltin and those other three-and-outers).

This is it, folks. Endgame.

The picks are in for the Championship Weekend, which, for all intents and purposes, means the picks are in for the Superbowl as well. Here's how it shakes down:

Our two leaders, Holzmacher and Sulatycke, have chosen the same teams for the last two weeks, so their fates are inseparable. They will walk away splitting the pot between the two of them if...

  1. Philadelphia beats St. Louis this week, OR...

  2. St. Louis wins the Superbowl next week.

Either outcome means a cool $900 for each winner.

What else could happen? Glad you asked. The most communist resolution of the season would be St. Louis and Pittsburgh advancing to the Superbowl and then Pittsburgh winning it all. Terry Bradshaw would be pleased. And so would Lund, Rudofsky, and Walsh, because they would join Holzmacher and Sulatycke in the winners' circle. We would have a five-way tie and each would get $360. It's not a new car but it will pay some bills.

And last but not least, in fact last but MOST, it sounds crazy on paper, I give you that, but if the once-lowly New England Patriots could somehow advance to the Superbowl and then play and beat the vaunted St. Louis Rams, then we would have one winner. A single solitary soldier. Not Holzmacher. Not Sulatycke. But like a Tom Brady from the ashes, Rudofsky would finish up the 2001 Football Pool with his own claim to $1800. Wow.

Good luck to all of the warriors. No matter what happens this weekend, you have the undying admiration of 196 of us. (Until next year, of course, when you are eliminated in 5 weeks and we see it was all a fluke.)
