I have to say that is not what I was expecting. We dropped. How can that be? With the absence of baseball we were supposed to return to our steady climb. We didn't. We were supposed to set a new record this week with our rating and retention. That also did not happen. It's all just mediocre again. And the timing isn't so good either, as we head into sweeps pre-empted and no one has ordered the back nine episodes yet.

So what's the excuse this week. There's always a spin. But I'm lost. Was At the Mercy of a Stranger that good of a movie that it won the entire 9-10 hour? And even though West Wing didn't win, it's numbers are pretty solid. They're basking in a little of the post-World Series glow. We're in a post-World Series funk. Now who knows when we'll be back on the air? And for how long?

Industry interpretation...

November 3, 1999

"ABC's fading Wednesday edged NBC's lineup in adults 18-49 despite a fourth-run seg of the Peacock's Law & Order, which dominated 10-11pm in the 18-49 demo. The Joanna Kerns-Tim Matheson telefilm At the Mercy of a Stranger gave CBS its best regular-sked homes rating in that 9-11pm slot since May 14, 1997."

--Variety

"UPN's Wednesday lineup of sci-fi dramas Seven Days and Star Trek: Voyager have proven competitive to the WB's cobo of Dawson's Creek and Roswell."

--The Hollywood Reporter
