Day 1 -- Monday, October 8

Ah, Day One on a sitcom. Call time around noon, relaxed table read, maybe rehearse a scene or two, spend a little time meeting all the new people, then home again before your brain even realizes you left.

But not this Day One. Day One for me was actually Day Three for them. I was on the East Coast last Thursday and Friday and missed the first two days of rehearsal. So today's schedule was much more the exception than the rule: 6am call time, on location, no rehearsal, long day. What kind of crazy world is this?

On top of that, the scenes were not easy ones. They were mostly part of a montage, during which our anti-hero, Todd, the so-called perfect father, grows increasingly disturbing with his Good Dad antics. I had envisioned a nice, steady escalation when I first read the script, but I thought that might be something I could work out in rehearsal. Not so. That was something I would have to work out ahead of time, not to mention starting the day with the final and craziest of the moments. Todd ends up chasing down a car to hang out more. So add "performing stunt work" to the list of sitcom surprises.

Luckily, the day went very well. The actors were nice, the kids hit their marks, it was a beautiful day, and the scenes were funny and fun to do. It was a fun jump-start to this little show. Don't get me wrong, I'll take the noon call time any day, but it was a great day.

Go on to Day Two.
