Shooting Report

Northridge beckoned. And I answered the call. It was finally time to finish up the Brian shots by getting those that take place outside.

The first shot of the day was all me. I was at a pay phone, calling my victim, still oblivious to what I had done. It was the audition piece revisited. I guess it went OK. There was no feedback because Vince and Emily were in the shot, and Bobby was pushing the dolly. So I just did it over and over, pretty much the same every time. It was the perfect example of needing to create your own world when no one is watching it, and no one will help you get there.

The next 4 or 5 hours found me studying geometry as Angel did her thing and the five stooges argued over stops over and matching and shadows. But the icing on the cake hit when we finally got to my last scene. We set up a shot, got it. Then another, got it. Then as we attempted to ready the next angle, it became time to discuss both "establishing" and "breaking the line." Again, the hopeless ignorance of things technical began to set in. The issue was brought up by someone I hadn't really seen around before, but he seemed quite sure it was foolish for us to go on becuase we had established the line so that it was impossible to get her angle.

"No, we're not breaking the line."

"Oh yeah, I see, we're breaking the line."

Those two lines were spoken about 75 times each as everyone tried to determine if we actually had broken the line, and if we had (or were about to), could we possibly save it. Meanwhile, I don't think I've felt more frustrated and fed-up with the whole student film concept. So I stood there with my hands patiently folded as they battled it out. I was thoroughly unable to offer any advice, and decidedly unable to care.

We finally decided on some magical angle that was supposd to either take care of or, at least, mask our foolishness. And I finally made it off the set of Twice a Victim, and only now, as I sit writing, and think back on that first all-nighter and then the shenanigans today, do I realize how appropriate that title is.
