The ad in Drama-logue reads like a scam...
...but it seemed it couldn't hurt to find out what exactly the deal was. Obviously, it wasn't simply free to get your headshots taken, but clever enough, you didn't have to pay until you were satisfied. This is very unusual. The cash-up-front policy is a city-wide favorite. The final cost of the session plus two 8x10s was sixty dollars. This is considerably less than the 395 bucks I was considering shelling out for Pat Gruney's own photographer to get a (useless) commercial composite. So I went for it.
The man is a character, but he seemed decent. (All the good con-men do.) The session went well. He shot one roll -- 36 exposures -- with a mixture of commercial and theatrical looks going on. (To get a feel for his style, we did a few serious to start, and then he said, "Well, now either you can just smile, or I can say something like, 'Would you prefer McDonald's or pussy?')
Brad did mention modeling as a possibility for me. I said I thought it cost too much money to get started. (Mitch [Clem, a self-appointed industry wizard] told me 1500 dollars only yesterday.) Brad said he could get a model started for 350 bucks; that would cover the photo session and arrangement for a Zed card (the modeling equivalent of a headshot) and 75 copies. I probably should go for it. What have I got to lose? It's only (Dad's) money.
