What began as a free consultation ended up in me "hiring" a personal business consultant. Mitch Clem, the sole employee/owner of Step Won, and I met this afternoon to discuss me getting my career off the ground.
Step Won normally helps people who have nothing, just a dream, and in four weeks they walk out of there with multiple headshots, a presentable resume, a decent cover letter, and two lists of 131 places total, where they are to send their face. One list contains 81 casting agencies, one of which will hopefully become the agency which signs you on. The other list is 50 advertising agencies, which cast commercials directly, not going through any agents. It would be nice to hear from a few of them on occasion as well.
So, the bottom line is that all I really needed from Step Won were these two lists, the transaction of which Mitch said would cost $50 when we spoke on the phone a couple of days earlier. So, I brought up the purchase of said lists, and made a firm offer of twenty dollars. Luckily, Mitch's memory failed him and the fee of 25 dollars was agreed upon.
The lists were not the only positive result of the meeting. Mitch gave me a few tips on my resume, some good ones: A. List my commercials B. Include "directing" training C. List my extra part last D. Call my machine service a service E. Put 'Full list available upon request' at the end of the theater credits, and F. List 'tap' again under special skills. Mitch and I also discussed the business, getting work, growing bald (him), and other stuff for a full one hour, 45 minutes.
As I left Mitch's presence, lists in hand, I felt a rush of excitement and hope. Everything was ready to go. Now the work had to begin. The next stop was kinko's for 200 finished, laser-printed resumes, and then I was ready for the big mailing.
