It was time to meet Sergio. The appointment had been made two weeks ago, and since then Patty [Goldman] had read that "Sergio" was in charge of Wallack & Associates print modeling department. Interesting.
In I walked, armed not only with a new set of proofs, but also with the knowledge that Pat back at ICA was very interested in me. That's a pretty foolish thing to think, of course, since nothing is set in stone in this business, especially when I was basing my confidence on a smile and a promise. But there I was with Sergio. And maybe I wasn't as up or "glowing" as I normally try to be at everything I go to.
The result was a lackluster meeting, neither of us too eager to work with the other. He was down on my new proof sheets and the chair in his office was just not conducive to a sharp meeting.
The short conversation ended with him saying he needed to see if they had enough of my type at this time. (He said that 2 or 3 times, actually.) Pier [Talenti] pointed out that I probably wouldn't even be sitting there if they weren't looking for my type. So he agreed with my interpretation that I was getting a little of a brush-off.
Out the door I went. At least I could say that I had met Sergio. I may never see him again, but the two of us were one for those few precious moments.
Ah, Sergio.
