Sometimes life is great. Tonight was exhilarating on stage and then lots of fun off stage. The sense of relief and accomplishment now that we have finally re-shot the pilot is so overwhelming.
For most of the day, everyone was pretty much on auto-pilot trying to stay focused and ready for tonight without going insane. Spirits may have been a little low since we had done the scenes so many times they were starting to lose their edge. But with the arrival of the audience and the first peals of laughter rolling onto the set, it all seemed to make sense again.
Among the most enjoyable moments to watch... Glenne embracing and tearing into her tirade against Nathan's character. It was fantastic. Whatever trepidation or frustration had plagued her this week (real or imagined by me), there was no evidence of it as she skated through the evening's scenes. Trevor was also great as the innocent son. He did some funny things tonight that I hadn't seen him do before. Joan Plowright was as sure and steady as the Titanic (sans iceberg) and Nathan Lane put on his game face and turned in another tour de force as the spoiled lothario. All very impressive and professional stuff.
My moments went well. The pre-taped limo scenes were well-received by the new audience. That was the most fun part of the evening. I have watched them too much at home since I have put one of them on my reel and I, too, had my doubts about their stamina. But they did quite well. My two little bits on stage went fine. My second laugh line didn't kill like it did in April. The set-up lines were tinkered with and I think that sucked a little life out of it. It still got a decent laugh and I'm sure someone in post-production can turn it up a notch so that it more resembles the original moment.
Afterward people went out to Pinot right up the street from the lot and celebrated the passing of the pilot with a martini or two. That was also very fun and, of course, bittersweet in that all of these great people are now being removed from my life. And so it goes. That's the exciting part of the process, too, so I guess you have to take both edges of the sword. I had a great return stint on the show.
