Day Seven -- Wednesday, April 26 Ah... redemption. Today was an awesome day at work. Did the director finally come around to being nice to me? No. Did he finally use my name? No. Did he show any gratitude when the scene went smoothly? No. But it didn't matter. |
Today I was literally bombarded by old friends. Work friends, no less. It gave me a tremendous sense of community and accomplishment. And no three-line role was going to rob me of that. One make-up artist was from Encore! Encore!, two others worked on Katie Joplin, of all things. I ran into the wardrobe assistant from Battery Park, where The Hawk and his costume were born. Also on the lot were a handful of Oh Grow Up folks from behind the scenes, including Set Decorator Lisa de los Reyes and 2nd AD (now 1st AD) Guy Distad. I spoke to each of them for a while. The director of Battery Park walked by my trailer and stopped to say hello. She was followed closely by writer Marco Pennette of Caroline in the City and Conrad Bloom fame. Plus, I took a stroll around the lot after dinner as the sun was setting and walked by not only a couple of those sound stages, but also ones from Unhappily Ever After and The Hanleys, both scenes of former glory. So I felt good. I felt like I belonged with the big boys, three lines or not. No mean director was going to take that from me.
But speaking of the big boys, right before the show today, Bonnie Turner, one of the creators and executive producers did take a moment to say that she thought I was wonderfully talented, and not just because my three lines were so polished, but from other work prior to my arrival on Stage 14. That was very sweet and really just about the perfect thing for her to say at that time after all of the activity of this week. She scored big points with me on that one.
Then the scene. Solid. I got a laugh everywhere a human could get one. And I waited for the audience to respond, don't worry about that. And did the director come running over and give me a big pat on the back and apologize for doubting me all week? No, I think he was busy patting himself on the back for all the work he put into beating that performance out of me. "I'm very good with inexperienced actors," I can almost hear him saying to himself. "Very good."
The show went well. Jeff Greenberg was around for the shoot so I got
to talk to him for a while tonight, too. It was a big success and I
was glad to be a part of it.
