You definitely want to peak at your last audition. You want them to build and build, so that each time back you sparkle just ever so much greater, convincing them they made the right choice by continuing to look at you, to consider you, and that they will be making the obvious right choice by casting you.
This Sunday-morning callback was no such audition. Perhaps I thought we would be working on the scenes a little, since the director was present at the callback. But I finished my two scenes at about 75% the quality of my original reading, I was politely thanked and dismissed. Movie-of-the-Week? Movie-of-my-Dreams.
