Today was the kind of day that I used to dream about. Three auditions. And not just three regular auditions, three pilot auditions. I had lived in Los Angeles nearly two years before I had read for three pilots. Today I did it in just over two hours.
The opening number was the Jonathan Groff Project. Jonathan and I have a minor history, though it's probably more of a history to me than to him. A year ago I read for a pilot with the same name. (That is not a coincidence.) It was one of my favorite pilots last year and I thought I had a good shot at it (Last Year's Audition). Ultimately, I did not get the role.
Last year it was a sitcom. This year, a single-camera comedy. This one is set at a high school, mostly, and I would play the best friend of the lead and narrate each episode. Again, Mr. Groff has written one of the best shows of the season. Not so much again, I did not do as well this year as I did last year. I thought I had some funny stuff going on, but the scenes were hard to do well. They were not the best scenes in the show. And I guess, more importantly, I didn't think they played to my strengths.
So another well-written, funny Jonathan Groff Project may have come and gone without me.
But hey, what the heck, I still had two more auditions to go, right?
