Time is running out on this year's pilot season. Today's was a pretty good one, though. It's the story of Michael "Kramer" Richards, whose character leaves a home security company to become a private detective. Needless to say, he's not very good at it.
My guy is still an employee at the home security company. The sides were unusual in that my guy could literally be anything. Any height, any weight, any color, any attitude, any style, anyone. Anyone at all. So the goal was basically to go in there and be me and hope that that's what they like. The only hint of a character was in the second scene, where my guy is nervous about the adventure they're on. I thought I could just be me in scene one and then show a little of the meek side in scene two.
As we were walking into the room, the casting director, Brian, turned to me and said, "We're only doing the first scene." Plan aborted.
I did the first scene and I did a good job of it, I just didn't get
the feeling I was doing the job they wanted. Sometimes you just
click, and in the case of this audition, sometimes you just don't.
